Understanding Product Codes & SKUs

This article explains the 9 different types of SKUs we support in Gateway CPP and the main reasons for their existence

Product ID - internal database ID but can be searched and is totally unique

SKU - Product Suppliers SKU and the main one used in the system

Retail SKU - the main SKU used by a retailer for a supplier product - however you can also use our SKU map so every different retailer can potentially have their own SKU for the same supplier SKU

Base Product SKU - as the same base product can be used to create many different Supplier SKUs this is used to identify the base product the supplier is made from

Stock Base Product SKU - as the name suggests this is used to manage stock of the base SKU - it can be the same number as the base SKU but has the flexibility to be different

Wholesale Blank SKU - this is the SKU from the manufacturer of the blank product that is used by the supplier. Companies can copy the wholesale blank to create their base product but this then means the software will know where to order the blank products from

Manufacturers Code - really just for reference this is another code field that can be used to identify a product it is typically a manufacturers reference

Barcode (EAN) - this is the unique code needed for POS systems or selling on a marketplace like Amazon

Variant SKU - this is where we get a bit more complex our system is capable of building and recognising dynamics SKU for more complex products that have SKUs for each size, colour and attribute
